Flowmeters

Flowmeters are essential instruments used to measure the volume, mass, or velocity of fluids—liquids or gases—as they move through pipes or conduits. They rely on a range of technologies to achieve accurate readings depending on the application and fluid type. Differential pressure flowmeters calculate flow by measuring pressure differences across a constriction.

Mechanical flowmeters, such as turbine or paddle wheel types, use rotating components to determine flow rate through rotational speed. Electromagnetic flowmeters, ideal for conductive liquids like water, measure voltage generated by the movement of fluid through a magnetic field. Thermal flowmeters are commonly used for gases, gauging flow by detecting heat transfer to or from the medium.

Coriolis flowmeters, among the most precise, measure mass flow directly using the Coriolis effect—detecting the twist or phase shift of vibrating tubes caused by fluid motion—and can also determine density and temperature simultaneously.
